Winter Coming In Fast

It seems that most people are in agreement - we're in for a harsh winter this year. Even if we just have a normal winter, it will seem harsh compared to last year! The Old Farmer's Almanac is predicting snow in southern Ontario before the end of October.

Are you ready? I'm not sure I know where our mittens and hats are, we used them so little last year. And of course we will need to accommodate a new little one due to arrive just in time for the chilly weather.

I have been hard at work at another "baby" as well. Yes, the Doomer - under the name many of you know me as, Lavette Paré - is in the final stages of a cookbook. It is based on my "Optimal Food Storage":
  • Sustainable without access to the power grid
  • As local as possible
  • Affordable and available in bulk
  • Real food
  • Grown or purchased in season and preserved with simple, reproducible methods
  • In sufficient quantities to get a family (and guests) through a few bad seasons, not 30 years in a bunker.
500 (give or take) pages of preservation tips and simple home cooking with fresh or preserved food. There is no TVP, powdered milk or powdered bouillon. There's nothing stopping you from using any of those, of course. I'm pretty excited about this, and it's something I can work on as my activity level is rapidly decreasing.

For those of you wondering, my midwife is very clear - the baby could come anytime between tomorrow and the beginning of November. While my body is sending some pretty clear signals that it's happening soon, my previous experiences suggest that I have a long and uncomfortable month ahead of me. I'm focusing on decluttering and simplifying, keeping things tidy (because who wants the midwife to see a messy apartment), and just generally getting everything ready for the baby.
Thanks for reading! Please leave a comment - positive or negative - and let me know your thoughts. Don't forget to subscribe to Canadian Doomer in a Reader or by email.

  1. I've just started pulling out the winter stuff - leggings, lined jeans, shearling boots, and parkas.  I'm really glad that I managed to get two very new-ish pairs of snow boots at the thrift store for this winter - it certainly sounds like I'm going to need them.  I'm also pulling out the slippers, flannel pants, warm sweaters, and wool blankets for at home - this place is poorly insulated, and I suspect we're going to need it more than ever.

As for the cookbook, I'm really excited.  I imagine it's been a whole pile of
work for you, but this sounds like exactly what I'm lacking and have
    wanted for awhile.

Wishing you all the best with the baby, whatever the best happens to entail at this point!  I hope that all goes well, that you get some time to take it easy.

  2. I always new our little ones were coming in the next 7 days when the wife suddenly got the house cleaning bug and started in on a major cleaning of our place.

Any relation to Jean Pare the cookbook queen? My mom had dozens of her companies coming cookbooks.

  3.  No relation that I know of. However, I don't know all of Mr D's family. :) Remember - I'm only "French" by marriage, even if my parents did give me a French first name.

Well, I think it was last Thursday when I first go hit with serious nesting, and it hasn't stopped.  However, mine generally seems to be the full last month, so that doesn't tell me anything. I have our birthing box ready with everything we need if the midwives are late (right down to an energy drink for Mr D!), baby clothes and diapers cleaned and put away, boys' toys sorted and weeded out, lots and lots of decluttering done, a sheet of phone numbers on the wall by the phone, and I've been panicking about any mess - gotta clean it NOW! This morning, I'm in the process of emptying and cleaning the fridge. LOL And I've become a complete homebody, like a broody little hen - I don't even want to leave the house to go to church.

You know you have something to say. And I want to hear it. I really do.

Really. I wouldn't be blogging if I didn't love hearing what my readers have to say!
