I've used the same imagery of zombies walking among us many of times. People are so out of touch with the world around them, so distracted by all the "I want's" and the latest "must have's", they rarely stop to realize what they do have or what's really going on around them. My DH is so "connected" that he rarely talks to us in the evenings once he gets home. It's sad, it's destructive and it's really annoying. He would happily sit on the couch, plugged into the computer and tv and cell phone, his iPod, his game consoles and whatever new gadget is out this week... ignoring things like throwing away his soda cans and fast food wrappers, our daughters diapers, talking to me... it's like a disease sometimes. And it is an addiction.

The company I contract too keeps trying to convince me to get a i-phone or crackberry but I say nope I have my old (7 years) cell phone that works fine. I admit I have it near me most of the time but I go days without getting a call or making one. I use it more often as an alarm clock when I'm on the road. For work I'm on call 24-7 for emergencies and if it goes off at 3am it's either a telemarketer who is about to get an ear full or something bad has happened. DW has a smart phone and checks her email on it constantly.

I will admit to once answering the phone during sex. The land line rung and we ignored it then the wife's cell rung and we ignored it then my cell went off and we ignored it then the land line went off again and we figure someone really needed to talk to us so I answered it. Turned out it was the mother-in-law excited about the new color of paint she was painting her living room in.

Er, probably not. The more important you are, the less you need this stuff. I have a cellphone out of necessity for urgent calls about work and family, but I would be more than happy to do without it, and I'm old enough to remember the days when nobody had cellphones, and life went on anyway.

Hmph. I like my outdated technology - but then again, I have an unlisted number and use the phone as rarely as possible. (But I do think it's cool that someone under 30 would be reading an old dinosaur like me.) I wonder what you'd think of L's black dial-up phone with its 6' cord. :) Have you ever seen a phone with a cord?

I DID read that about younger people not buying cars and I think it's awesome! And I did notice - a car dealership near us is offering a free .... ummm ... tablet (to me, that means a pill, not a computer!) if you buy a car.

Mr D and I drive a 13 year old Mazda, so I don't think that's a "status symbol" by anyone's standards! With three kids, I can't see us going vehicle-free, but I *would* love to have a horse and buggy. How's that for outdated technology?! :D

I have to admit, I love having a cell phone. But we don't keep a landline, as I'm part of the under-30 crowd and as far as I'm concerned, that's outdated technology. However, I do change out my phone as infrequently as possible, and I don't have a smartphone.
I also walk to and from work every day, bike instead of drive whenever possible, and don't answer my phone during dinner, on the toilet, or during sex. (!!!)
According to studies, car companies are scrambling to figure out a way to sell my generation more cars because we're actually ambivalent about car ownership and even driver's licenses. I know most of my friends (even the ones who don't necessarily care about the environment) think of cars as a necessary evil--something to have only when necessary. They're not a status symbol anymore.
Which is not to say that my generation is totally great. When it comes to technology, most of us are just as selfish and consumerist as the rest of society. I think technology can be fantastic when used properly, but that most of the time it's used poorly.

I am the only person in my circle of friends and acquaintances who doesn't have a cell phone. And I can honestly say that I have never said to myself "gosh, I wish I had a cell phone right now because I could really use one."

Well, I certainly love my current modern extra, like flipping a switch and having light, but I also learned out to my own O mile candles out of rendered lamb fat, I love being able to turn on the heat but I also have the ability to heat with wood, the same with the cooking, I like my propane or electic stoves but I can make do with my rocket stove or a wood stove.. I like my movable phone in the house but I have the old fashioned one that works without power..

DH just got informed in the last while that he will be getting a Blackberry from work and we both had a chuckle because there is little to no service typically at the farm, Still that is good in some ways, I will feel a bit better knowing that he can call for help in winter, or text me to let me know that he is running late, but having said that, we have made due just fine having no cell phones.

I can get out of the habit of checking my email but I do like to it at least once a day, but I have gone weekends or even a full week without and not worried about it any, but I have found that with the blog, you need to give the regulars a heads up, or they worry a bit :)
